Something Nice from Marthas Vineyard
One-of-a-kind gifts made by hand from local materials

Picture big enamel kettles on the kitchen stove, a wooden stick, successive buckets of water for rinsing out in the back yard, an old wooden drying rack, and a perfect Vineyard day; clear sky and a breeze for drying the newly combed wool. There you’ll find Stephanie hard at work and in a constant state of creating.  From materials she loves, along with whatever she has on hand, something lovely, whimsical and useful is born.
About Stephanie

Stephanie Tilton Rossi is an island native of Martha’s Vineyard. Her family goes back 12 generations to 1673, when Samuel Tilton became one of the first five English settlers of what is now Chilmark. Life on the Vineyard is a joy and a challenge, dictated by the rhythms of the changing seasons and corresponding occupations as it always has been.

What are we going to do with all this wool?

It all started when one of Stephanie’s sisters adopted a lamb from a local farm. Its mother was not caring for her, as sometimes happens with sheep.  Her sister took the lamb home, named her Rosie, and raised her as a beloved pet.  Parsley, a brother for Rosie, came to live with the family next. Sheep need a haircut every spring, so after Rosie’s and Parsley’s first visit with the sheerer, the Tiltons had beautiful fleece - along with the fun of learning how to skirt, wash, pick, and card wool.  The question then became, what to do with it?

The three Tilton sisters decided to learn how to spin wool - two of them buying spinning wheels of their own while Stephanie started making little sheep. Eventually she discovered the felting needle which became a handy tool indeed! The more she used it the more she found she could sculpt and coax the wool into little objects of art.

She enjoys spending time with wool: the texture, the scent, how the fibers tell what they want to become.  Rosie and Parsley are gone now, but friends keep her generously supplied with fleeces. White is the most plentiful but she does acquire a few beautiful brown fleeces. Some of these she has blended with white fleece in the carding stage, producing a gorgeous light brown, which for her purposes she calls “medium.” All other colors she dyes by hand using natural dyes.
